ATVs and a new, old House

I couldn't leave out this picture. While in Mazatlan, we took a ferry to Stone Island and rented an ATV to tour the island. It was gorgeous, and so much fun! We could have done the cruise sponsored ATV tour, complete with goggles, helmets, waivers, and a max of 5 mph, all for $110/person. Instead, it was just the two of us, an ATV, no maximum speed, all for $30. Brilliant! I think they must have pretended not to notice that I was pregnant. Oh, and the faster you go the smoother the ride. The baby loved it!

This is what we came back to after the cruise! Our house! No more renting for us! And no more white walls...well, as soon as we get the painting done. And while I'm on the subject, let me officially announce on the blog (although I think all my loyal blog readers are already aware) that we have moved to Seattle, back into our old house, AND we're expecting baby number four, a little girl, in March.

For the kids, this move was like Christmas! Emmeline and Joshua kept unpacking toys and saying, "Remember this!?" Benjamin has been literally immersed in books since we unpacked them. It's so cute!

The boys' room, the baseball room! It looks already very lived in with messy beds and monster trucks littering the floor. Joshua is so proud of his room, and Benjamin loves sleeping on a big boy bed.

The girls' room. This room, though already a mess of stuffed animals and Polly Pockets, remains unfurnished. We're working on it! Emmeline keeps asking me to paint pink flowers on the green part of the wall. We'll see. The curtains are about as much frill as I can handle right now.

Mexican Riviera Cruise

I'm not sure if you can tell in this picture, but we lucked out and got a cabin with two twin beds and a set of bunkbeds! What?! Actually, when we first got on the ship, Luke's company had us bunking in separate rooms with three (male) roommates each. We were so excited to get our own room that we didn't even complain about the bunk bed situation.

Towel animals were a highlight of our day! We saved them all until the end of the week and took a group photo.

Puerto Villerta
Whew! You can find McDonald's anywhere! And no, we didn't actually eat here, or anywhere but the ship for that matter. We just thought it was fitting that amongst all the authentic Mexican cuisine were some greasy fries.

And, of course, the evening's towel animal!

Pictures!

It's autumntime!

Emmeline won an award for outstanding achievement in math. She was so cute marching up onto the stage to get her award!

Emmeline and her teacher, Mrs. Gallagher.

A cruise to Mexico!? You bet! Luke's really excited in this picture because we had just been told that lunch was waiting for us on board. Seeing as we don't drink or gamble, we pretty much just gorged ourselves for a week on this wonderful getaway!

And, finally, me in Cabo San Lucas...right before it started raining.

Halloween

Batman "Nanan", Superman "Nanan" (like the mask, courtesy of our latest JetBlue redeye flight?!), "Flower" Emmeline's alter-ego, Bacon, and Eggs (or rather, Egg, one really fat, pregnant one)!

Pictures!!

We went to Utah in October, and had the opportunity to visit with Luke's mission president and mission "mom." It was a wonderful evening, and I hope we'll get the chance again soon!

Let me explain. Luke was playing flyer's up with the boys and managed to get a baseball stuck in Grandma's tree. He tried to get it first by throwing a bat up there, but the bat also got stuck. Enter a frisbee. The frisbee knocked down the bat, but failed to dislodge the ball. At which point, Luke decided to climb the tree. He still couldn't reach the ball, so had to throw a broom from his spot on the branch to the ball. After about 15 attempts the ball finally fell, and Luke climbe down unscathed. I would have just left the ball up there until it rained.

Benjamin joined us for a morning of loading the moving truck in late October. (We transported our stuff before we transported ourselves.) Obviously, running up and down the truck ramp wore him out! I think that this is the first time he's ever fallen asleep without Wilson (his pink elephant).

"I Don't Know Where the Bottom Drawer Is!"

This was Willie's reply when I asked him why he didn't change his underwear this morning.

Phenomenal

Luke and I just attended our first parent-teacher conference. It made us feel all warm and fuzzy, like we're doing our job as parents. Or, it could be that Emmeline is just a great kid. She is aparently the most well-behaved, academically advanced kindergartener. Aw, I'm blushing! Her adorable teacher told us that she had to make a deal with Emmeline that when the class is doing flashcards, Emmeline has to count to three before she is allowed to say the answer. So cute. Emmeline will also be receiving an award for math excellence at an assembly next week. We are so proud! (Are the grandparents carrying on the tradition of sending money for good report cards?)

It is interesting, though, I wonder if, in another part of the country, Emmeline would be quite as "advanced." She has a certain advantage here, being a native English speaker. The first trimester goals for kidergarteners are realistically within Joshua's reach, so it's all relative....

In other news, Joshua is amazing us with his death defying scooter stunts, and Benjamin is amazing us with a language explosion (yay, the end of screaming is within our reach!). We have great kids!

A and B

A. Translation please: "dah op uuum!"

B. Is it possible to fall into a deep depression because baseball season is over, and Joe Torre made a deal with the Dodgers?

Halloween!

Unfortunately, Benjamin suffers from the malady of being almost two. One of the symptoms of this disease is extreme emotional swings. He started the trick-or-treating night by crying because he had to walk instead of riding in the stroller. When he realized he was getting candy, though, he warmed up quickly.

Another symptom of being almost two is being small and unnoticeable in the dark. This worked in Benjamin's favor as he let himself be lost in the crowd. To illustrate, at one home, he stood next to the homeowner as she bent down to pass out candy to the other trick-or-treaters and nonchalantly filled his candy bag. When the homeowner finally noticed him, he got more candy than the others because "look at him so cute just waiting here!" I wonder if she noticed her bowl was almost empty, or if she noticed Benjamin's candy bag dragging on the ground as he left her house!

As Benjamin got more and more comfortable, he began letting everyone know that he was Superman--"Nanan!" He also made himself at home in about three houses, just walking in the door when the homeowner went to get the candy.

All in all, the kids did well, had fun, and I'll post pictures at some later date.

Tagged!!

I've been tagged. So, here are six fun facts about me. If you get tagged, do the same!

1. I don't particularly like talking about myself. I'd much rather brag or share stories about my kids or husband. This is probably why I stink at keeping a personal journal. If my posterity want to learn all about me, they'll have to glean stories from someone else, or read between the lines on the blog and in the scrapbooks.

2. I remember everybody. I remember faces, names, even sometimes birthdays and random factoids. I am usually shy, though, to say hello to an old acquaintance because I think that they won't remember me. With my ten year high school reunion looming, I would much rather just be a fly on the wall than actually attend the reunion (except I'm looking forward to getting the award for "Most Kids," I'm pretty sure I'll blow everyone out of the water).

3. Besides the Gospel and my family, I have two great loves. The New York Yankees and Twinkies. I know this doesn't come as a shock to anyone, but it's important in any list of facts about myself! I just got a Twinkie purse (so cool), and for my birthday one year a friend compiled a cookbook entitled "101 Things to do with a Twinkie." It's about the only cookbook I ever use.

4. Since we talked about two great loves, let's talk about my two great hates. The Boston Red Sox...no just kidding. They are down on the list, but two things I hate the most are cooking and animals. I hate to cook and bake. I dread it. And yet, I love to play hostess, have people over, serve them, etc. It's an idiosyncrasy of mine. And animals--they are gross, they stink, and domesticated, they are high maintenance. They belong outside, in the wild. I don't understand the fascination of going to a zoo to stare at animals. Sick! And yet, I keep doing it because my kids love it. Ugh.

5. I frequently say or do things to embarass myself, and I remember them long after I should. For example, about six years ago I got locked out of my house (through no fault of my own). I sobbed. I sobbed when my sister-in-law happened to drive by and rescue me. I sobbed when I called the locksmith. I sobbed when he got the door open. Holy cow! Was that worth crying over? Was I going to die? No! And I'm still so embarassed about that display. I do stuff like that all the time. I hope that someday I can grow into a graceful, but witty old woman who never says or does anything embarassing. It's my dream.

6. I'm a neat freak. Not a clean freak. Just a neat freak. I hate clutter, I hate messes, I hate when Luke takes leaves a trail of jacket, keys, wallet, cell phone, spare change, and finally shoes from the door to the couch. I often can't sit still until things are all in their place. This causes a lot of grief during meal times (gotta have the kitchen clean before I can sit down to dinner!), family night (just sit and watch the movie!), and on vacation (just sit down and relax!). A clean space is relaxing for me, though, and I actually enjoy the organizing. I also enjoy making lists, and the satisfaction of getting things done! I am glad, though, that I married someone who balances me, and that kids are literally forcing my to loosen up. They, in turn, (Luke and the kids), are learning to be organized and tidy.

All right, that's it! And Kelli, Gretchen, Lindsey, Alivia, Angie, and Melissa...I'm tagging you!

$1 Fun

Yesterday, we had a whole day of fun for only $1! That's my kind of day. We went to fire safety day at the fire station--ate hotdogs, climbed on the fire trucks, jumped in the bounce houses, and got fire hats. Then we drove to Fairfield for the Candy Festival--more bounce houses, game booths, and free candy, of course. We finally dished out a buck to decorate some cookies, of which Joshua and Emmeline simply licked the frosting off their popsicle sticks, ate the baggie of M&Ms, then devoured their cookies unfrosted. The best part of the day was the dunk tank. Emmeline threw her softball (well, lobbed...like an old granny) at the target and missed, so I told her to just go hit the target. She did, but the guy in the dunk tank fell toward her, getting her all wet. "I didn't know that was going to happen!" She had a good long cry. Moral: Cheaters never prosper!

I also have to report on Emmeline's first field trip. Again, I was tempted to follow the bus to the pumpkin patch and shadow her to make sure she was safe. However, I resisted, and she made it home safe and sound. Emmeline enjoyed the pumpkin patch...I think all the kids did, as it was raining and they pretty much just played in the mud for three hours. Emmeline came home with the ugliest pumpkin in the bunch. Seriously. It has a stem out both ends. Luke was joking that the pumpkin patch owners probably had an office pool going for when/if someone would ever take that pumpkin home. I'm pretty sure it's been there since 1952, so the winner probably got a jackpot. I can't believe I had to pay $3.50 for it. Anyway, the first field trip went off without a hitch, so that leaves one more "first"--picture day! Ah, it's almost a rite of passage to live for the rest of your life with at least one awful school picture hanging on grandma's wall. I can't wait!

Pictures!

Goodbye, Dad!
Walking to school!
Joshua's first day of preschool!
Benjamin's opinion of early mornings.
THIS is Joshua standing nekked in our trunk, right after falling into the fountain at the wedding reception. Notice his nose...that's from the day before, preparing for X-games 32 on his skateboard.

Pictures

The kids at the Angels game. We sat right above the bullpen, and the kids each got a baseball from there. Joshua carried his around with his mitt for a week until I finally convinced him to put it away so it wouldn't get lost (although, I was actually more worried about it breaking a window).

Emmeline's school clothes all laid out. Love the matching job!?

Emmeline making her lunch for the first day of school. I'm so mean...get your own food!!!

All dressed for the first day of school! I actually took pictures every morning for a week, but I'll spare you the photo show!

I have Pictures!!!!

Did we actually take a FAMILY picture? Wow! Almost everyone is looking at the camera!

Yay, pictures!!! These were taken at the San Diego Temple on Labor Day weekend. We took a short trip down there as our last hurrah before we left Los Angeles. I'm so glad we got to go...the San Diego Temple is gorgeous! Of course, so are my kids, so here are multiple pictures of them!

Personality

The last couple of days, I have been observing the differences in Emmeline and Joshua's personalities. I posted a while back about Joshua's love for adrenaline manifesting itself at the theme park. This past weekend, EmJ and Joshua went to a reptile show. While Emmeline came home waving a snake in my face, no joke, Joshua just said, "We saw bugs." He'll race down a dangerous water slide, but won't go near an animal. We've also never had an issue with Emmeline sleeping--she's not scared of the dark or monsters under her bed--but Joshua ended up sleeping on the floor in our room last night because there was "a man living in the wall." (Which in turn gave me bad dreams about some pshycho hobo living in Grandma's attic...but I digress). Also, Emmeline got sick at school this week. She literally threw up all over the floor and then just continued sitting at her desk until the teacher noticed. Having dealt many times with a sick Joshua, the words "quiet" and "no big deal" don't really apply! Just some funny observations.

P.S. Emmeline is all better, but others in her class have followed her example, the teacher included! Also, the snake that she was waving in my face does not belong to her, thank goodness! The lovely snake skin glued to construction paper, however, does. Yuck!

"Blame it all on my roots...

I showed up in boots,
and ruined your black tie affair."

Yesterday we drove two hours to attend a beautiful and elegant wedding reception (congratulations Jenna!!!!!). It was in Palo Alto at the biggest, nicest, and Luke would add "muffiest" home we've ever been to. Joshua...fell in the fountain.

"I'll just say goodnight,
and I'll show myself to the door."

Hillarycare 2.0

Government: Today, we finally recieved our registration from the CA Department of Motor Vehicles. We began the registration process on March 24, 2007. That's just about six months.

Healthcare: Today, our health insurance got switched from the Southern CA to the Northern CA region. A process requiring just over six weeks.

Neither of these projects are 100% complete.

So, per my calculations, a combination of government and healthcare would require an approximate turn-around time of 7 1/2 months.

Goooooooooo Hillarycare!

(Anyone intent on voting for the dev...I mean Hillary, you should probably cease reading my blog at this time).

It's Raining, It's Pouring...

and my joints ache and my nose is stuffy. I swear, I'm going to be one of those old ladies who can "feel it in my bones" when a storm is coming!

That being said, I'm elated to have been able to wear a jacket today. I love jacket weather!!!

Benjaminese

Here is a small sample of Benjamin's communication skills.

Yesterday, we were playing outside when Benjamin started screaming bloody murder. I went over to him (notice, I didn't run or panic...that poor boy has cried wolf one too many times), he stopped screaming and grunted something. (Think, Tim-the-tool-man-Taylor) I said, "Was there a bug on you?" "Uh-huh." He then pointed at his leg and grunted some more, which meant, "The nasty fly landed on my leg and scared me." Then he started stomping his foot, which meant, "Next time it comes over here, I'm going to smash it!"

This type of exchange is becoming very common, except that up until a few days ago, all the "uh-huh's" were "nu-uh's" and I had to decipher if he really meant yes or no...that was interesting...hence the screaming. Anyway, I just thought that was a fun example of 19 month old communication.

I haven't forgotten about the non-working video. I will fix it eventually. Probably long after you, reader, have forgotten.

Joshua had his first day of preschool today. He ripped his new pants sliding on the gravel. Go figure.

Funny Moments

Well, the first week of Kindergarten has ended without incident...actually, there was a papercut, but Emmeline is recovering.

I promise to upload first day of school pictures as soon as I can, but until then I just wanted to share some memorable "walking home from school" conversations.

Emmeline: Today we learned "blue is the sky" (they did a different color every day). We painted the blue sky with sponges. I didn't eat the sponge, but that other boy did. He said it tasted like cotton candy.

Emmeline: I'm going to make cards for the girls in my class. Just the pretty girls.
Me: Well, you should make them for all the girls. I think they are all pretty.
Emmeline: (exasperated) If they would wear princess stuff then they would be pretty.
Me: How would you feel if you didn't get a card because someone didn't think you were pretty?
Emmeline: (incredulous) But I'm the prettiest one!

It's been a great week, although Emmeline is quite tired. The last two days she has broken into weepy tears after school because the school lunches were so good and her sack lunch was so boring!

We got Joshua started into preschool this week, too, which will be good for him. He packed a lunch on Sunday night with Emmeline and refused to eat it until Thursday--when I finally took him to storytime at the library and told him it was preschool! Starting next week, though, he'll have "real" preschool on Tuesdays and storytime "preschool" on Thursdays...and he couldn't be happier.

That's it!

Hot

It's 10:00 pm and it's 100 degrees outside. If I had to stay here one more day, I think I'd die...but I don't!!!!!! Woohoo!!!!!

I'm movin' tomorrow, I'm movin' tomorrow!!!!

We went to Universal Studios today for one last hurrah. It was so hot, though, that we just hit the attractions that get you wet then came home and slept.

I've got to finish packing...or rather, wandering around the apartment aimlessly moving stuff around to creat nice neat piles...this pile goes in the car, this goes in the truck first, this is for breakfast and then goes in pile #3, which is last in the truck...I'm so anal.

The Beach

We went to Newport Beach yesterday with Luke's Aunt Karen. It was so nice to see the new(ish) temple, and then to BBQ on the beach. The kids had a good time...mostly playing in the sand. Benjamin threw a fit when we tried to remove him from his sand trap, and it was hilarious!

Raging Waters Pictures...

Emmeline applying sunscreen...
Willie and Gus, Let us Play!!!!!
The "after" pictures. Everybody looks happy, and they were, but they were also asleep within minutes!

Obviously, a water park is not really conducive to picture taking, so I hope you enjoy our meager selection!
